Remove tracking parameters from links on Mac
Copy a link from a newsletter or a social post and it often carries a tail of tags that record where you clicked. They make links long, and they pass that information on when you share them. Your Mac already handles some of it; the rest depends on where the link goes.

What tracking parameters are
A link is an address followed, sometimes, by a question mark and a list of parameters. Some parameters are needed to load the right page. Others exist only to report where the click came from.
- Campaign tags: utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and the rest of the utm family
- Ad click identifiers: fbclid from Meta, gclid and dclid from Google, msclkid from Microsoft, ttclid from TikTok, twclid from X, and yclid from Yandex
- Email marketing tags: mc_cid and mc_eid from Mailchimp, and _hsenc and _hsmi from HubSpot

What your Mac already strips
Since macOS Sonoma, Safari's Link Tracking Protection removes known click identifiers such as gclid and fbclid from links opened in Private Browsing, and from links in Mail and Messages. In Safari's advanced settings you can extend advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection to all browsing, not only Private Browsing.
Two limits are worth knowing. Apple leaves utm campaign tags in place on purpose, treating them as ordinary analytics rather than personal tracking. And the protection applies to links that Safari, Mail, and Messages open, not to a link you copy from another app and paste into a document, a chat, or a ticket.

Cleaning a link by hand
Deleting everything from the question mark onward removes tracking tags, and on many article and product links nothing else is lost. Be careful with links that need their parameters: a YouTube link keeps the video in v, and a search link keeps the query in q. Stripping those breaks the link.

Apps and extensions that clean links
Dedicated link cleaners exist as menu bar apps that watch the clipboard and as Safari extensions that clean a link before a page opens. They are a good choice if link cleaning is the only thing you want to add to your Mac.

Cleaning links as you paste
A clipboard manager can clean a link at the moment it leaves, whichever app it is going to.
